Abstract

The rise in the number of overweight subjects in the industrialized nations, in all age groups, is a problem being confronted at various levels by public health bodies.
In this account, the author sets out the general lines of a correct and scientifically balanced hypocaloric diet, underlining the ethical dimension implied in Nutrition Science.
The physical and mental harm provoked by wrong diet regimes should not only warn us about how many non-specialists there are in the sector, to be refrained from suggesting whatever food program, but also warn the medical dietitians and nutritionists to consider the moral dimension of the problem.
For a diet to be effective and harmless it has to be extremely personalized and requires a mental, physical and moral identification with the patient by the physician-nutritionist. Only in this way can a dietary plan be put together that is both  taste-wise satisfying and biochemically valid. In short, a diet that is ethical by virtue of its extreme personalization.
