Let's talk about mosaics and pieces.

I think in Italy there are some excellent piece makers and only a few mosaic creators. Let's start with an example of last Spring: elimination of Lazio from the Champion's League in the quarterfinals on behalf of Valencia, an event which then, before the unexpected title won at the last minute in a context that still has to be cleared up, seemed a true tragedy. That is the whole point, i.e. the fact that a piece that does not form a mosaic. Let's see.

First piece: a football discussion on Lazio, the owner, the trainer, the players, etc. This is a piece you can find everywhere.

Second piece: an overview of Italian football. No Italian club is still involved in European tournaments, a connection with the national team, which these days is not playing too well: just compare with the other European clubs and national teams, etc.

Here, too, there are plenty eloquent commentators with a penetrating style.

Third piece: does nothing other come from this strictly football evidence? Really? For example a different attitude of Spaniards towards sport, as it is also testified by the latest events organized by Spain, such as the World Football Championship and Barcelona Olympic Games? And talking not only of sport, but also of cultural and more generally “politic” events, does anyone remember the Spanish superiority on the occasion of Colombiadi of 1992, with Seville outclassing Genoa? And going on to add the pieces no one wants to add, has not the Spanish government been much more efficient than Italy in the last 15 years within the European Community, starting from the financial initiatives funded by Brussels to the setting up of courses in line with EEC expectations and directions, while a tottering Italy is going to adopt only now the above-mentioned courses? Fourth, or fifth, or sixth piece: what do the two women chairing the Senate and Chamber of Deputies under Aznar government represent? Mtion that, after all, is more respectful of the opposite sex? Then, have I managed to make myself clear when I talk of pieces and mosaics? Yet, from my mosaic one can infer that the usual consolatory expraybe local colour, feminism of posts and caricatures, or rather a tradiession “fortunately there is also Spain in Europe”, where Spain is supposed to be the tail-end that brings out Italy, is no longer sufficient.

Unfortunately, the same way of reasoning and the same cultural attitude can also be found in our ruling class towards the cinema, the environment, the economy, politics, etc. To sum up, we desperately need mosaic makers who are indifferent to (intellectual) danger...
