Success in Roma of the
6th WORLD CONGRESS OF ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY ROME '98
The 6th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery (IFSES), associated with the 6th International Congress of European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), took place in Rome from the 31st May to the 6th June 1998.
For the first time Italy was selected to host a scientific event of this kind.
Prof. Alberto Montori, Chairman and Professor of Surgery at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” was the President of the Congress.
This event gathered together 5.000 participants in the “Eternal City”.
Before the Congress there  was a Nurses' Seminar that aimed to inform  Nurses on the most modern surgical  technologies, on the disinfection  and sterilization of the laparoscopic instruments.
.
The Nurses also  had the possibility to follow 16 live surgical demonstrations and discuss with their colleagues in the Operating  Room the various moments of the operations. The Seminar  was followed by 500 participants coming from all parts of Italy, Europe, USA, South Africa and Australia.
A Post-Graduate Course also took place  before the Congress. It was dedicated to “Diagnosis and Interventional Flexible Endoscopy, Interventional Radiology and Endoscopic Surgery” .
The Lectures were given by the greatest experts in the World  in these fields.
There were also live demonstrations (16 patients operated in two days) with T.V. connections with the S. Raffaele Hospitals of Milan and Taranto. This interesting and successful  Course was followed by 322 participants for 10 hours a day.
66 Countries participated in the World Congress counting 5.000 delegates among Nurses, Participants, Accompanying persons, faculty, industry  representatives
On Wednesday 3rd June, in the morning, following the Papal Audience, there was the inauguration of the 1st World Expo of Surgical Technologies and in the afternoon the Opening Ceremony of the Congress took place in the breathtaking scenario of the  Capitol Square celebrating Rome with excellent music, dance and traditions. An exceptional event!
The show was presented by the famous, beautiful and professional Milly Carlucci.
Over 3.000 guests were delighted by the wonderful performances of great artists such as the ballet dancers Maximiliano Guerra, Lisa Cullum and Viviana Durante; the opera singers Ines Salazar and Maurizio Frusoni; the Bellini Choir from Ancona; the ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera of Rome; the “Quintana” from Ascoli Piceno and the Band the “Carabinieri”, the Italian Special Police Corp.
After the show followed  a welcome reception in the Museo del Risorgimento inside the Vittoriano.
The Minister of Telecommunications issued a special commemorative stamp for the 6th World Congress.
A daily Congress Newsletter was issued in order to inform the participants of all the events that took place each day of the Congress.
The scientific programme was articulated in 86 principal sessions, 10 lectures, 7 face to face on the traditional treatment vs the video-assisted treatment of the tyroide, cancer of the pancreas (Photo 22) , gastroesophageal reflux disease, colon-rectum cancer. (Photo 23)
There were video-presentation in 11 Sessions, 340 Posters in 9 Sessions and 700 Oral Presentation in 66 Sessions.
6 Satellite Meetings and 5 Special Seminars dedicated to surgical specialities (urology, gynaecology, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstrucitve surgery, thoracic surgery and orthopaedic surgery) were organised.
More than 250 Delegates frequented the educational activities of the Learning Centre (Photo 24).
Furthermore a Consensus Conference on the Video Laparoscopic treatment of Benign Lesion of the Colo-Rectum was organised, with special attention to the diverticular disease (Photo 25).
12 Awards were presented to the best videos, Posters (Photo 26) and Oral Presentation by   Ethicon Endosurgery, Autosuture and Karl Storz.
87 were the generous sponsors. The principal ones were  Ethicon Endosurgery, USSC (Autosuture), Kendal, Karl Storz, Aesculap,  M.S.D., Wyeth Lederle, Banca di Roma, ecc.
As far as the large number of participants, the high scientific level, the novelties, the demonstrations  for the first time presented in the field of virtual Endoscopy, the use of robotics in surgery and telesurgery are concerned, the World Congress  of Rome was the most qualified international scientific event in the surgical field held recently.
For example the Intuitive System, that is developing a computer-enhanced minimally invasive surgery system that uses proprietary electronics, advanced robotic, and enhanced visualisation to greatly improve surgical technique and take surgical precision far beyond what is possible today.
Another example may be the new surgical ultrasound scalpel that allows a precise  and safe cutting coagulation and dissection of tissue and vessels, producing minimal thermal tissue damage in laparoscopic surgery as well as in open surgery.  We saw also important novelties in the early diagnosis of breast lesions such as the Mammotome Vaccum Biopsy System or the ABBI System.
This Congress of Rome made the point on the State of the Art of the new Minimal Invasive Surgery at the end of this century and it has given the basis for the new prospectives that will be real and operative in the 3rd Millennium.
