Maria Luisa Brandi is born in Viterbo in 1953. She graduated summa cum laude from the Faculty of Medicine of Florence in 1977. She has been entitled to the Specialty in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the School of Prof. Giorgio Giusti in 1980. Between 1980 and 1984 she has been working in the area of thyroid diseases at the University of Florence Medical School. The four years (1984-1988) spent at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA under the mentorship of Dr. Gerarld D. Aurbach have been fundamental for the future developments of her basic and clinical research in the area of Mineral Metabolism. Associate Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Florence since 1992 she has been establishing a group working in the area of Mineral Metabolism with a focus on Parathyroid Diseases. Head of the Center for Hereditary Tumors of the Tuscany Region since 1999, she became Full Professor of Endocrinology of the University of Florence in 2000. Member of several National and International Scientific Societies, she is Author and Co-author of more than 400 papers and Editor of numerous books and monographies, all regarding various fields of Mineral Metabolism. She has also been honored with several recognitions in Italy and abroad. Eight patents were generated through basic research carried out under her tutorship.
