Osvaldo Spagnulo's lyrical alchemies 
The definition “archeology of fire”, expressed by Nicola Micieli, is one of the most suitable for Osvaldo Spagnulo's work, a unique and highly evocative research, which has gone on for 50.  
The usual means are replaced by the wise use of the burning of paper and other materials on the surface of his pictures, as in a mimesis of the traditional pigments.Altough Alberto Burri had already experimented with these original wway, Spagnulo is the first artist to use fire in its most particular expressions. In his fine repertoire the different kinds of paper, glued on canvases or fire-resistant supports, react each in a differet way to the flames, producing unexpected, almost palpable hues. 
 
In the same way, mysterious mixtures of bitumen and other materials seem to disclose arcane emotions, archetypes of pèast sensations. The fire itself its me think of this artist's resemblance to the patient medieval alchemist, who, trying to turn lead into gold, transformed in reality himself and his perceptions of the world. 
Spagnulo's refined manual ability has found its freedom in the use of materials: gauzes and filaments, hatchings and blends; a freedom which is carved
