Great
pianists of the 20th century
Philips Classics
“Great
pianists of the 20th century” is a really monumetal editorial plan.
Major classical labels have
joined forces to publish this selection of the greatest piano-playing ever
recorded: 10 boxes - starting in September '98 and finishing in October
'99 - which include the best pianists of this century, from Arrau to Serkin,
from Horowitz to Rubinstein.
In
the first box we can find, among others, Martha Argerich, who plays
some of major concertos in the piano repertoire (Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff
and Ravel), and Emil Gilels, who shows his genius with a variety of composers
(Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Mozart and Ravel).
Last but not least Arturo
Benedetti Michelangeli, the Italian pianist become a legend for his performances
as well as for his reluctance to be seen in public.
Definetively an oppurtunity
not to miss for keens on classical piano.

Centenary
collection 1898-1998
Deutsche Grammophon
100
years of life for Deutsche Grammophon and a great collection to celebrate
them. Actually this is also a real history of recording, an evolution which
led to present high-tech products.
The collection includes,
among the 60 titles, performances which date back to the beginning of 20th
century, to conductors such as Bruno Walter and tenors such as Enrico Caruso,
while the list of recordings finishes with a performance of 1997:
the Emerson
String Quartet playing Beethoven. In the middle a repertoire of major conductors
- Karajan, Bernstein, Abbado...- and best performers - Rostropovich (cello),
Richter (piano) and Anne Sophie Mutter (violin).
