Megna, was born on October 18th 1940 in Catania where he attended
the Medical Faculty. On July 12th 1965 he graduated with honours getting
the dignity of the Press and the degree prize “Prof. Vincenzo
Bisceglie”.
Then, from November 1965, he attended, as a specializing doctor, the
Clinic of Nervous and Mental Diseases of the University of Naples.
From November 1966 to November 1977 he was an assistant-professor at
the chair of Nervous and Mental Diseases of the University of
Messina.
At the same time, from 1967 to July 1971, he worked as an assistant
doctor at the Provincial Mental Hospital “L. Mandalari”
of Messina.
From December 1st 1971 he works at the Clinic of Nervous and Mental
diseases of the University of Bari. At first availing himself of leaves
for study reasons; then, from November 1st 1974 as a permanent assistant-professor.
After the degree, to make wealthier his culture he went: in April 1967
to Strasbourg at the “Centre de Neurochimie” directed
by Paul Mandel; in January 1969 to Milan at the Institute of Pharmacology
Researches Mario Negri; from June to July 1969 to Milan attending the
University Rehabilitation Department of the Clinic of Mental Diseases
directed by Prof. Gildo Gastaldi; in July 1979, as a “visitor”
to New York at the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine directed
by Prof. Howard Rusk; in September 1992, as a “visitor”
again to Jonkoping and then to Stockolm at the Rehabilitation Department
of Karolinska Institute.
On July 20th 1968 at the University of Naples he became a specialist
in Mental and Nervous diseases with full marks.
On June 30th 1972, at the University of Siena he became a specialist
in Kinesitherapy, Physioterapy, Rehabilitation and orthopedic gymnastic
with full marks. On December 5th 1978 at the University of Palermo
he became a specialist in Children's Neuropsychiatry with full marks.
On November 1st 1973 he became a lecturer of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
and then, on August 1st 1980, a permanent professor .
Included among the winners of the competition (announced by Ministerial
Decree 24/05/1984 and 18/07/1984) for professor, he has unanimousely
been called by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bari to
teach Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (today Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation).
Since the school year 1991/92 the Faculty of Medicine of the University
of Bari has enstrused him with the teaching of Neurologic Rehabilitation
too.
Since 1990 he has been professor of Phisical Medicine and Rehabilitation
at the University of Foggia too.
Since 1982/83 he has been the Director of the School for Rehabilitation
therapists of the University of Bari and since 1992 Coordinator of University
Diploma (U.D.) for Physiotherapists in Puglia (Bari, Brindisi, Taranto,
Foggia). In this Course of U.D., he is professor of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation and Neurological Rehabilitation at the University
of Bari and Foggia.
He is the Author of about 500 scientific publications and of five books
CLINICAL
ACTIVITY
Since
1971 at the University Clinic of Bari, he has also been put at the head
af the Department of Functional Recovery and Re-education providing
for its organization, and developing physiokinesiterapic area.
He collaborated with Orthopedic Clinic, the Institute of Surgical Semeiotics
and with the Chair of Plastic Surgery of the University of Bari. He
has useful relations, as for rehabilitation, with the cardiologists,
rheumatologists and with colleagues interested in respiratory physiopatology.
Since 1979, he has been working as consulting phisician at the Rehabilitation
Medical Centre (of the work clinic institution), of Cassano Murge (Bari).
In this place he organized a group of specialists in Phisical Medicine
and Rehabilitation and with them has been interested in the recovery
treatment of neurologic disables.
But he has also been interested: in the rehabilitation of outcomes of
vertebro medullar trauma, of cerebro-vascular diseases, of sclerosis
with plaques, of myopathies, of extrapyramidal diseases and of different
neuropsycological troubles.
Since 1983, with collaborators he has been interested in Care and Rehabilitation
of Vegetative states.
CONTRIBUTION
TO MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
He
is a member of the following associations:
- International Rehabilitation Medicine Association
- Italian Association to fight Parkinson's disease and extrapyramidal
diseases;
- Italian Association of Experimental Biology;
- Italian Reahabilitation Medicine association (SIMFER);
- Italian Association of Manual Medicine;
- Italian Association of Neurology;
- Italian Association of Children's Neuropsychiatry;
- Italian Medico Sporting Association;
- Neuro-rehabilitation Interassociation
Since 1993 he has been part of the European board of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation.
Besides from 1973 to 1996 he was part of the National Board of directors
of Italian Rehabilitation Medicine Association: since 1983 as vice-President;
since 1987 as President and as Past President since 1990.
In 1991, with other neurologists, specialists in Phisical Medicine and
Rehabilitation and Neurophysiologists, he founded the group of “Neurorehablitation
Medicine Studies”.
From 1992 to 1997 he was the President of the College of University
Professors of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
