Let us put aside discussions already abundantly present to deal with the real problem of transplants, which consists in the scarce propensity of Italians to donate organs. What are the subconscious reasons? Up to now they have not been looked into in a serene and objective manner, but most times using the usual clichés: culture. etc. In our opinion, from this refusal to donate organs on the part of Italians emerges an important fact, basically their lack of confidence in those who work in the health sector, which is nurtured, day be day, by articles, programmes, surveys published by the media, which translate into the slogan “malasanità” (“bad healthcare”). And how can one fail to have doubts, when dozens and dozens of doctors are continually accused of incompetence, dereliction of duty, superficiality, not to mention the scandal in which children are involved, seemingly used to supply spare organs and that, it is said, pass also through our country. The fear of getting involved in this particular “business” cannot be ignored, just as it is impossible to ignore the provisions to be made. We do not need debates or round-table conferences, but it is absolutely necessary to organise as soon as possible a campaign of moral re-education in order to bring back into the medical sector the true values of professional ethical practice, the only possible antidote which would ward off fear, win back confidence and give the Italians the pleasure of being generous even after death.
