The environment recover and settling in, the recover and the management of archaeological areas, the safeguard and the enrichment of the territorial and environment resources belongsince ever to the enterprise culture of the Società Autostrade. But if in the sixties the recover of evidences and finds were possible only on consequence of chance discoveries during highway works, nowadays availing of forty years of experience and of the most modern applied technologies to the environment monitoring, intervention methodology has changed at all. Territory is in fact submitted since the planning phase, together with the Archaeological Office, to studies and surveys to verify and carry out previous safeguard actions. Within this frame it has been undersigned on February 1998 an agreement between the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental
Conservation and the Società Autostrade just to carry out recover, safeguard and valorization interventions over the cultural heritage next to the highway network and the same day the Managing Director of the company, Bruno Corazza, and the Superintendent for the South Etruria of Rome, Anna Maria Moretti, have undersigned the first concrete act following the protocol: an act of franchise and accessory covenant for the use of the "Villa of the Volusii Saturnini”. The Villa (I century b.C. - I century a.C.), found in the sixties and dug out in collaboration with the Office, requires further safeguard interventions. The engagement of the Autostrade is to carry out the cover of the mosaics of the Villa and link the area of the Villa with the remaining portion of the state archaeological area, that by the means
of this act, the Office grants to the Società Autostrade, eliminating the actual highway ramp, with the purpose to turn it more enjoyable for public. On October of the same year the UNESCO has extended its 'high permanent patronage' to the Euromediterranea Foundation, risen by the Società Autostrade at the end of 1996 with the purpose to conserve, enrich and valorise the historical, cultural and architectonic heritage related to the highway network not only in Italy, but also along the international routes. As underlined by Prof. Giancarlo Elia Valori, President both of the Società Autostrade an the Foundation, building infrastructures does not
mean at all to cement territory, but introducing with wisdom and with positive aesthetic and harmonic results huge structures allowing the development of a modern country and valorizing furthermore landscape and environment and really offering collectivity the possibility to appreciate the archaeological and cultural heritage. “After the agreement with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental, the first stage of the Euromediterranea Foundation program is the intervention at the Villa of the Volusii -Prof. Valori said- and it places in the widest plan of development of the approach routes to Rome and services for the 2000 jubilee.” The intent of the Società Autostrade bringing to the rising of the Foundation, is that to turn one's own engagement structural, organic and incisive as regard to the promotion and diffusion of culture and of those values of European and Mediterranean integration that mainly feature it. A long term strategic engagement that will go on, as the President of the Company has ensured, even when the Autostrade will be privatized, and he is sure that the Italian entrepreneurship's far-sightedness in safeguarding new values of respect toward environment and culture is at the roots of a 'dynamic' development of modern society. But the attention to culture by the Società Autostrade passes the European limits. The Società has
published for example in 1998 a book about China just entitled “The China Planet “. The book, featured by suggestive photos, is in fact a contribution to the acknowledgement of an event, the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Popular Republic of China, having surely marked in a relevant way the twentieth century history. At the ceremony the book was presented there were S.E.Wu Minglian, Ambassador of the Popular Republic of China in Italy, Prof. Antonio Baldassarre, renowned President of the Constitutional Court, senator Valentino Martelli and the President of the Iri, Prof. Gian Maria Gros-Pietro; Prof. Valori underlined in his speech how “meaningful and important it seems, within the new international frame, the evolution signals coming from the Chinese economy
that, thanks to the spirit of responsibility and the coherence showed by the politic authorities of that country, is ready to become an important protagonist in the next century world economy.” In the last ten years, on the other hand, it has been recorded an growth of the Italy/China interchanges, also on the basis of a bilateral agreement in 1991. The continuous growth of the interchanges between Italy and China has turn the Popular Chinese Republic the most important trade partner of our country in Asia, preceded only by Japan, while in the CEE Italy is at the third place after Germany and United Kingdom. In fact Italian investments in China can be estimated in nearly a billion USA dollars, involving more than 700 of our enterprises, and it is furthermore foreseeable a direct Italian involvement into the programs of development of economic sectors the Chinese Government deems of priority interest. Among those there are remarkable outlooks in the transportation on tyres that could interest the same Autostrade Company. As asserted by President Valori, “the strategies followed by the sector responsible foresee the realisation of an huge project that must connect 95 of the most important Chinese areas by the means of twelve highway legs for more than thirty thousand kilometres “.
