Although
neovascular AMD is the main cause of legal blindness among people
people aged more than 65 years in the Western world, public awareness
of this retinal disease is very limited. An international survey found
that only 2% of adults knew that AMD is the principal cause of blindness
in this age group, and as many as 82% did not know what it meant.
The prevalence of AMD is directly proportional to the average age
of the population, which means that it is becoming a serious public
health problem: it is expected to triple over the next 25 years as
the average age of the population increases. |
