Nicola Orzalesi

 

 

Nicola Orzalesi is Full Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Histology and General embryology at Milan University, where he is Director of the San Paolo Eye Clinic and of the First Post-graduate School of Ophthalmology.

During the course of his long career, which began in the 1960s, he has held various posts in the Universities of Genoa, Sassari and Cagliari; he joined Milan University in 1984.

His main research interests cover the retina, glaucoma and ocular surgery, and have led to the production of more than 300 scientific papers, many of which have been published by leading international journals.

Worthy of particular note is the 1963 publication in J. Ultrastructure Res. of a paper that is universally recognised as the first report of the process of photoreceptor renewal, one of the most important moments in retinal physiopathology.

He is a member of numerous international scientific societies, a well-known Congress speaker, and the Secretary of the International Society of EyeResearch. A large number of students, some of whom are now the holders of University Chairs (Cagliari, Brescia, Milan-Bicocca), have benefitted from his years of uninterrupted teaching.

He has performed more than 10,000 surgical operations in all fields of ophthalmology. He and his team are currently highly involved in age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma research programmes financed by the Italian Ministry of University Scientific Research, the European Union and private bodies.

He is the coordinator of the Verteporfin in Italy (VIT) Study, which is the Italian trial relating to the use of photodynamic therapy in patients with age-related macular degeneration.
