It is not our intention to enter into the merits of the case being debated in the Court of Milan, let alone to enter the chambers where trials are programmed and judgements are passed; nonetheless the current clashes between the public prosecutor’s office in Milan and the Ministry of Justice are causing us to worry, because we can see the potential consequences. As frequently happens, if it hadn’t been for active intervention from the opposition, the debate would have proceeded along its normal route, but the tone has deteriorated and a collision is taking shape between public institutions over the fundamental principles of our constitution. At this point it is not enough for the President of the Republic simply to issue an invitation to moderation - he must speak out clearly and call everyone to their duties, with no compromises, because there can be no compromise on issues regarding constitutional laws, nor subjective interpretations. We are confident that President Ciampi, whom we all respect, will take the proper measures. We also hope that the situation may soon return to normal. A word to our colleagues: No more extra-large pictures, no more five-column headlines! Let’s stop making publicity stunts out of serious problems, just to sell a few more copies! For years we’ve been reading, hearing and talking about a dysfunctional health system, corrupted politicians, the highbrow reflections of some figure whose only goal is to find a position, and even about rotten justice... We’ve seen everything and anything – and it’s just about enough. Let’s write, talk, make programmes to teach the young and the less young that there can be pleasure in honesty, in not smoking cigarettes or pot, in not degrading oneself with liquor or drugs, a pleasure in helping others... and a pleasure in staying silent, because even silence is golden, but that’s something that’s not written!
