Abstract: Multiple Sclerosis: Past and Present. Thoughts for a Therapeutic Future

Since the times of Charcot’s first descriptions to nowadays, Multiple Sclerosis has become an ever more topical subject for discussion, thus managing to emerge – although with some difficulties - from the uncomfortable limbo of “orphan” diseases.
This has happened because scientific research has really made astonishing progress, and because around this disease, also thanks to the precious work of dedicated associations and institutions, a justified interest has developed, both on the medical side and in the equally important area relating to its social aspects.
At what stage are we today, for this disease, with respect to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation? In this article, the Author reviews the history of the clinical definition of Multiple Sclerosis, the current therapeutic options and, lastly, the promising prospects coming into the limelight, together with the most recent resources made available to cope with it.
