RISCHIO BIOLOGICO
E PUNTURE ACCIDENTALI
NEGLI OPERATORI SANITARI
a cura del gruppo di studio “Phase”
Lauri Edizioni

The Phase (People for Healthcare Administration, Safety and Efficiency) Study Group formed in April 1999 as an interdisciplinary cultural group devoted to the study of safety issues arising within the healthcare sector. Professionals from the healthcare, university, institutional, legal and industrial world have contributed to drawing up these pages with the purpose of providing a complete and comprehensive outline of the various issues related to the safety conditions involved in working and living in a complex environment, such as that of hospitals. The investigation method has actually sprung from a debate involving personal spheres of competence and experiences and thereafter developed into an analysis and interpretation of the regulations in force. During this research work, he group has put together data and information made available by national and international surveillance institutions, as well as the information already made available by National Healthcare Agencies. Particular importance has also been attached to the actual case record and to the worldwide scientific literature available on the subject.
This detailed analysis has led to the following considerations:
- Occupational exposure of healthcare staff to biological risks represents a priority problem for all healthcare organisations.
- The nature and seriousness of the exposure arises from accidental pricks deriving from the use of syringes, needles and vascular catheters.
- The exposure to pathogens which are transmitted by haematic contact (such as HBV, HCV, HIV) unfortunately is still rather frequent both in hospitals and in domiciliary assistance (both in Italy and abroad).
- Nurses represent the category displaying the highest risk of exposure (as they account for approximately 57% of the overall cases of cutaneous exposure), followed by that of auxiliary staff, trainees and medical staff.
- The cost involved by the management of accidental events, according to a conservative estimate, amounts to approximately 34 billion lira only as far as diagnostics and post-exposure prophylaxis are concerned.
- 80% of accidental pricks can be avoided through the employment of safety tools and by properly informing all those who are actually exposed to this risk. The conclusions of this research work are quite interesting, in that they highlight the dangers which healthcare workers are exposed to during their everyday work.

DIZIONARIO BIOGRAFICO
DEGLI SCIENZIATI E DEI TECNICI
di Giorgio Dragoni, Silvio Bergia e Giovanni Gottardi
1999, formato 170x240 1.600 pagine, 98 000 lire
Zanichelli Editore

Even scientists are men, having fallen into the banal history of their time, immersed in everyday problems, beset by feelings, fears, joys and discomforts that alternate with the victories and defeats of their research. Their existence is inextricably entwined with their formulas, theorems, studies and research, which have often given rise to institutions, schools, academies and prestige for their country. This is the idea behind this book, which brings together the biographies of some 6,000 different individuals. ůSome are scientists who have devoted themselves to mathematics, the natural sciences, anthropology, medicine, architecture, philosophy and geographical exploration, some are technicians (engineers, computer experts, industrialists, inventors), all covered with ample bibliographical references and referrals that make it an interesting read.

RAPIDA SCENDE LA NOTTE.
CAPIRE IL SUICIDIO.
Jamison Kay R.
PrezzoL. 35.000 - 426 p.
Editore Longanesi Collana Il Cammeo

At the age of 28, Kay R. Jamison, after a long period of depression, attempted to take her own life. The long and difficult road back was for her the start of a new life, devoted to the study of manic-depressive disease and suicide. For this, the author of this courageous autobiography, a psychiatrist considered one of the leading authorities in research on manic-depression, has found the strength and the courage to make her 30-year story public, from her personal testimony to her professional experience with suicides affected by the same manic-depression. The author brings to these pages all her knowledge, research and clinical experience in this problem. It is important to decode the signals that the aspiring suicide gives off, and to study the profound motives that lead them to prefer death to life, and that is why Jamison studies the psychological bases of suicide.

LE VIRTU' DELL'OZIO
Armando Torno
144 pp. - 26.000 lire
in libreria dal 19 giugno
Mondadori Saggi

Armando Torno has a passion for time as a topic to be probed extensively to be able to understand the profound meaning of our lives. Time is the dimension that man expands, constricts, fills and empties as he sees fit, today more than ever now that the new technologies give the illusion that we have ever more time at our disposal to fill as we please.
But what an illusion! Today, time is the real tyrant: everything is accelerating, becoming a frenetic search for reaching solutions that seem obsolete the moment they’re born. A frenetic pace, for work, for family commitments, for fitness, even for rest. He who stops is lost! Or not? No! Neurotic management of time denies man that which no machine can restore: the desire to create, with his hands, his mind, his dreams, personally, imperfectly, and wonderfully human.
Only idleness, tossed out, abused, despised by cultivators of free time, taken up by extreme sports, transoceanic voyages, and fine company, only idleness can revive the oldest and most noble part of our souls. The author suddenly frees from their sense of guilt those who love to let themselves go in a calm, placid lounging about, furnishing them with authoritative masters from the past as support if they are criticized, because there is a long history and even a philosophy of the dolce far niente that goes from the Classic Greeks and Latins to today.
