| My
meeting with Bernarda Visentini took place after the strong feeling caused
in me by the photos of her sculptures in a catalogue.
Then I visited her during an exhibition of her sculptures in Milan, and then by a long talkwhich allowed me to know this extraordinary sculptress in depth. In
fact, it is not without emotion that I heard her saying: “My wish is to
make the human impulses rise from the past and from the oblivion as vital
forces, looking for the sources of art and ideas, and I intend to
recover their roots and fix them in the present and push them forward to
the future...this gives an impulse to my search and moves the realization
of my works”.
Much of her works is possibly due to her meeting with the prehistoric mankind traces in the caves of Perigord, Dordogne. Her short, intense and - I dare say - also suffered creative activity can be dated back to 1980, when she left the teaching (literary subjects) to dedicate herself to a full-time creation. Following by instinct the more advanced artistic movements of those years, Visentini passed through the “Action Painting” to arrive at a more reflective research where the Idea, the Painting, the Sculpture and the Space harmonize through a natural process of maturing. In her last works, the artist uses a special material, the light concrete, made in Germany. “Just
think about it: - she points out - versus concrete, which I have used too,
the ratio is 600 kg/m3 versus 2,200 kg. This allows to give a particular
lightness to even large-size sculptures”.
Bernarda Visentini defines herself a self-taught woman, though she has studied. For her the most involving thing is her wish “to be able to let myself down into the same psychological conditions of the first men who - with an incredible vital charge - were living a free and constructive relationship with the cosmos.” While I was speaking with Visentini and glancing through the photos of her works, I recalled in my fantasy the great
statues of Easter Island, the mysterious menhirs, the dolmens, the signs
of Camunia.
And she points out again: “ .. I do not intend to transfer a passed culture into the present, but to look for a new relationship with today’s reality...” More should be said about Bernarda Visentini’s creativity. But to remain in the field of emotions, we believe that any visitor in front of her works feels those interior vibrations which allow to catch the ancestral languages which we are carrying with us since our origins, and which the artist’s sensitivity proposes us in a new version by a pure sculpture, essential in its forms, signs and materials. A sculpture which makes us “feel” the man’s history following the traces that the artist detects throughout the centuries. A mankind’s tale of our times, offering elements to get a conscience of ourselves, indispensable to look to the future. Bernarda Visentini was born at S. Pietro Natisone and lives in Tarcento (Udine). She has been exhibiting since 1986 in many Italian towns and in important art exhibitions abroad. |
