

Antonio
Spagnolo was born in Sava (Taranto) in 1956. He graduated in 1981 from the Università
Cattolica del S. Cuore with a degree in Medicine and Surgery.
In 1985, Spagnolo specialised in Cardiology and in 1989 in Forensic and Insurance
Medicine at the same university.
In 1986, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, graduating magna cum
laude from the Faculty of Philosophy at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana.
From 1994 to 2000, Spagnolo filled the position of university researcher at
the Institute of Bioethics in the A. Gemelli Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
at the Università Cattolica del S. Cuore.
In 1997, he was appointed assistant professor at the Camillianum International
Institute of Pastoral Medical Theology. Antonio Spagnolo was assigned by the
Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the Università Cattolica del
S. Cuore to fill the professorship in Bioethics as an associate professor, and
was appointed Director of the Institute of Bioethics at the Università Cattolica
del S. Cuore for the 2000/2001 academic year.
Spagnolo has devoted his personal research to many different fields of study:
clinical bioethics, ethical and forensic medicine problems associated with HIV-AIDS
infection; ethical problems connected with clinical experimentation, and the
ethical review of research protocols, just to name a few.
Some 134 scientific publications on specific themes of bioethics are attributed
to Spagnolo, from contributions to and editing of volumes, congressional proceedings,
articles in specialised journals, and one volume of which he himself was author.
Antonio Spagnolo serves on the Board of Ethics for the Dermopathic Institute
of the Immacolata, is a member of the Board of Ethics for the Bambino Gesù Paediatric
Hospital, and is a delegate member to the Director of the Institute of Bioethics
on the Board of Ethics of the Università Cattolica del S. Cuore.
