The entire pictorial and sculptural work of Giovan Battista Pedrazzini, a Lombard artist (he was born at a Secugnago di Lodi in 1933), develops always round a playful world of fables, a naive world fed of a warm innocence stirring the poetic imaginary, the merry creativity, the intensive inwards happiness, as on the other hand a whole class of the Italian painting of this century. Art an poetry have found a
disenchanted confirmation in this world loved by children, along with that theory about the “little boy “ that was dear even to Pascoli, and today this path, already twenty years old and having had very large personal expositions both in Italy and abroad, a considerable sequence of collective expositions and prizes besides the presence in several museums, clears up the thematic choose and mainly the style, the very personal style of Giovanbattista Pedrazzini. First a bestiary becoming the absolute protagonist, a plumed and quadruped zoo that seems to be cut-off in a simple word, in a background turning into a monochrome universe of the marvel laying on, with irony too, as a Spartan painting, a figure synthesis evoking a sort a metaphysical silence. Well-know critics as Carlo Bolloli and Franco Passoni have already highlighted this very beautiful imaginary that emotionally lives a paradisiac world, able to spell dreams, the ancient dreams of man, reviving here restless. Well then Pedrazzini has succeeded as few in recovering a post-futurist pictorial style that, notwithstanding the richness of the figure elements, regains possession of a background painting of net tones, of forms where any dimension is aligned in an illustrative contemplation. The landscapes of Pedrazzini are peculiar, they fit the growth of colour going from the bottom to the top, recovering scenographically that minorale world where a vegetable dictate is silhouetted, trees and plants, trunks a stylized flowers. The
reference to seasons is the pretext for these poetical and pictorials chooses coinciding with that world, loved in the origin land, the lower Po valley, where the Ticino flows into the Po and marks just the bestiary and that world of fables told before. We remind with regard to Pedrazzini the whole work of Tullio Garbari, historical figure of our century, even him engaged to remind pictorially this fable country world. Pedrazzini points most at the synthesis collecting forms and colours in an optical specularity. Our artist is poet too, it will be enough to remember his book of poems published at Rome in 1989 by the Antitesi Editions, entitled “ Beyond the horizon “, the same you find in many works, placing between sky and earth and highlighting a sort of magic and metaphysical frame of mind, a shining of lights coming on and almost dying down thanks to the dusk and the strong brightness as if the sun were at the zenith. The images, birds, horses, sheep becoming heroes as a collection-sample inside this endless sky, a game of suggestions, low voices, trembling silences; the same houses being rather unreal sets; the results pointing at in this last period an ossified geometry, well highlighted also in the polychrome sculptures, make us deem that the artist has achieved a paradise of forms of his, a place of molecular curios. To the starting poetry it succeeds now the ecstasies of light and absolute of forms, even more exalting as far as they are mirages.
