From 22 to 24 February, the “2nd International workshop on immunity and viruses” was staged in Naples. The event was organised by the Cotugno Hospital, with the patronage of public bodies and scientific associations.
On the opening day, a paper was presented by Carlton Gajdusak, former Nobel laureate for Medicine, who addressed the topic of the moment, mad cow disease and its correlations in human beings, with the already-known Creutzfeldt-Jakob disorder. Immediately afterwards, the Editor of Leadership Medica and Leader for chemist, Genina Iacobone, presented the latest publication of Cesil, “Immunity and related pathologies”, edited by Oreste Perrella (chief-physician of immunology and infective illnesses at the Cotugno Hospital) in conjunction with Oreste Cuomo of the liver transplant centre of the Cardarelli Hospital of Naples. The editor recalled that with this new book, the publishers are continuing along the same road undertaken in 1995, with the publication of “Le infezioni Hiv, aggiornamento e prospettive” (HIV infections, updates and prospects), edited by Oreste Perrella, Mariano Francis La Via and Livio Finelli. In its 22 chapters, “Immunity and related pathologies” collects together the contributions of eminent national and international scholars, many of whom attended the conference. As Professor Livio Finelli stressed in his introduction, “this book, which illustrates the strong progress made in terms of know-how in the field of immunology, contains lots of information which, expounded in a linear and understandable way, not only provides concrete proof of the limits and barriers overcome thanks to the strong commitment of prestigious researchers, prompted only by the desire to extend to an increasingly greater extent the borders within which medical science is still restricted, but can also represent a key to understanding future observations.” In actual fact, the topics addressed are many and concern a variety of illnesses Among the authors, we feel duty bound to name the foreign researchers Mariano Francis La Via, of South Carolina University, rigitte Autran and Paul Debré of the Pitié-Salpètrière Hospital in Paris. Milan University is present with the staff of Professor Mario Clerici, who address the topic of immunopathology of the HIV infection. The Federico II University boasts scholars such as Tartaglia, Racioppi, Carrieri, Lombardi, Bariffi, Oriente, Ammaturo, representing the immunology, biology, hygiene and preventive medicine, neurology, respiratory illnesses, rheumatology and haematology institutes. Nor are the other Neapolitan health institutes missing, from the Monaldi to the Caldarelli, from the Pascal Foundation to the Cotugno Hospital. Finally, mention must be made of the contribution of the Department of experimental medicine and biomedical sciences of the Tor Vergata University of Rome, with professors Aquaro, Francesconi and Perno who take a detailed look at the role of macrophages in neuro-Aids. The picture is therefore very exhaustive, as is shown by the presentation of the book itself, the copies of which literally sold like hot cakes. The editor of Leadership Medica also announced the forthcoming opening of Sanitade.com, the medicine and health portal which will provide the medical fraternity with the opportunity to link into major world research centres, from which they will be able to obtain information and updates in real time by way of top-level exchange.
