Ermelando V. Cosmi

 

Graduated at the Medical School of the University of Perugia. Research Fellow at the University of Pisa, Florence and Rome. After training at the Departments of Anesthesiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), New York (USA), he became Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics at AECOM (1973) and therefater at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome. From 1981 to 1990 he was Professor and Chairman of the 2nd Dept. of Gynaecology & Obstetrics, University of Perugia, Italy. Since November 1990 he is Professor and Chairman of the 2nd Institute of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University “La Sapienza” of Rome. In the period 1994-1997 he was Adjunct Professor of Anesthesiology, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School and since 1997 is Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics in the same University. Since 1999 he was appointed adjunct Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, NYU Medical School New York. Consultant and Techical Advisor at Guang-Dong Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Canton, China. President of the research area of Cosenza-Calabria of the Italian Research Council (CNR). Director of the Italian PhD Programme in Perinatology, and Member of the Executive Board of the International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (FIGO). President of the Italian Section of International Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health (MCI). In 1984 he founded the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine of which he became President (1984-1988). Since 1985 he is President of the Bioethical Commission of the National Research Council of Italy. Member of the World Federation of Scientists since 1998 From 1986 to 1988 he was President of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine and from 1993-1996 of the World Association of Perinatal Medicine. He founded and is President of the International Society for New Technology (ISONET) in Gynecology, Reproduction and Neonatology and of the International Association for the Lung Surfactant System. Founder of the Mediterranean Society of Human Reproduction and Neonatology (1998). He coordinates the BIOMED 2 Concerted Action of the EEC entitled Europe Against Immature Lung (EURAIL) (1998-2001). His scientific production includes more than 700 papers of which 163 in peer reviewed journals and 44 books in english.
