From a won curse to another unfortunately
still intact for the Italian two wheels. The Valkenburg world week was
not exalting for the azure colours. In total one gold, 2 silvers and 4
bronzes enrich the palmarès but confirm our home taboo in hitting
the most expected race, that is the professional on road world race. We
were strongly favoured the day before but also this time it has been reached
only a placement. It's already six seasons an azzurro runner is not awarded
at the roof of the world. In the edition won by the Switzerland it has
been reached only the third place of Michele Bartoli deemed by the most
in the best condition but who had to reckon with a day, to say the least,
bewitched. Two falls, one of them running more than 80 km per hour, a puncturing
and two bicycle changes, those the events of the misfortune dropped
by the goddess, blindest as never before, upon the Tuscany unlucky
athlete. So it was useless the splendid team game of the Asics-CGA; at
the end the physic and nervous strength worn out by a chasing race have
made the difference. And now, to break the spell, the next edition in Veneto
is already being thought about. We have almost a year to prepare the way
for our top men. Hoping that at least one protector saint of ours would
then decide to be guilty of a patriotism sin.
