The personage: Varese basket
VARESE: finally a star
It took as far as twenty years to see again the Varese at the top of the Italian basket. That is the third force in our championship as regard to shields getting against the Benetton Treviso the tenth title of its glorious story and bringing back to the Lumbard town the enthusiasm of the golden ages. Those, at the turn of the seventies, when first the Ignis and then the Mobilgirgi (the different sponsors for the same Varese) were able to hit as far as seven championship in ten season. A real territory dominion going beyond also the national limits, as proved the 5 Champion Cups, 2 Cup Winners' Cups and 2 intercontinental cups. A group having been an epoch-making and including among others Dino Meneghin, Ossola, Rusconi, leg Manuel Raga and Bob Morse, able to break the other ten-years hegemony by the Simmenthal Milano and to open this time and extraordinary cycle. As all the great, Varese knew how to raise again before the triumph. A straight fall had brought it first to the first relegation of its history (1991) before that a wiser management policy gave it back the status of primadonna. Now the several Pozzecco, Andrea Meneghin, Mrsic and De Pol merger their own talents with the expertise of the indestructible Cecco Vescovi, club's recordman with more than 500 performances. The legitimacy of an overwhelming success at the finals passes throughout a regular season the Varese has dominated since the beginning, slowing down only when games were over that is when the scheme of the play-off have anyhow already cleared the highlight combination. Just making a step backward, the semi-finals challenge against the Virtus Bologna has been the only moment of uncertainty about the final result. It is not that the Lombard have risked to be eliminated; but in the following appearing as a hand over, legs and arms of Recalcati's boys shacked a bit when in the series with the Bolognese it was get to the match-point. A desperate basket by Abbio at only 4 seconds from the end seemed to bring about a series widely prejudiced by the ex-champions of Italy with the two beginning defeats. But the chill and discouragement of the PalaIgnis for a final that seemed so sure has had an only immediate effect and brought the worry of postponing the qualification for the final event with the Treviso, that was got against the Virtus in the fourth round. Just against the Veneti, the Roosters proved as the harmony of a group programmed to win has found finally also the right mix among talent and young exuberance and the awareness to be finally mature to win the national iris. The talent of some singles (Pozzecco and Meneghin over all) left free to influence in the good and in the evil the match, has ended to award the Recalcati's decisions, a pragmatic coach but also able to take into account the delicate psychological implications of all his players. At the end Varese gets the titles but overall finds the way to open a winning cycle. There are all the ingredients to revive also in Europe the splendour of the past, by a company having known how to restart from the young without losing sight of the budget. And now that the green line has grown and has proved it's able to win, defeating the teenage fears, it is the time for a further qualitative leap continental level.
